Hello 900 Voices Recordists!

Below we hope we answer most questions, but we are happy to answer any more that arise and we’ll add them here.

Thank you for getting involved in 900 Voices.

This page is for all you volunteer recordists. There is a downloadable booklet which contains more detailed info, FAQs, links and anything else we think might be useful to you.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING AS A VOLUNTEER PROJECT RECORDIST:

So, essentially, yes, you’re aiming to record with a person or number of people. It will take the form of an interview. The themes we’d like to include in every recording are those of BELONGING and CONNECTION. We have some tips and ideas about how you might structure your interview; however, it is open to interpretation.

RECORDING WHO ..?

You may already have a person you’d like to record with in mind, that’s great. We will lend you a recorder and give you some tips.

We also have lots of people we can arrange for you to record, so you don’t need to have anyone prepared. Recordings can take place in any quiet location. If you are going to be recording someone you don’t know we will arrange one of our locations for you to record in.

As well as individual recordings we have several community workshops planned which we need recordists for. In that setting someone else will be facilitating discussion and you will oversee recording.

KIT AND SUPPORT:

You do not need to have any previous experience with sound recording. We have easy to operate sound recording kits and everyone who volunteers to make recordings for 900 Voices will have the opportunity to attend a recordist workshop on Wednesdays workshop at St Giles 4pm-5pm .. and do please email a heads up so we know you’re coming.

The workshop will give you training in the tech and some interviewing tips.
Every interview requires a CONSENT form to be completed and signed by both the interviewee and the interviewer. We supply you with these.

In getting involved as a 900 Voices Recordist you may find you have some fascinating conversations. If you enjoy doing it, you are welcome to do as many as we can facilitate!

FILE TRANSFER:

If you are making one recording, we will get the audio file when you return the kit. However, if you are going to make a few recordings we may arrange a file pick up, or file transfer so we keep all the recordings safe.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE RECORDINGS:

The recordings will be transcribed. Participants who would like to check over the recording will have the chance to do so and if they wish request that a section of conversation is removed. This goes for both interviewers and interviewees.
The recordings will be part of the 900 Voices oral history collection and selections from the recordings will be included in the sound installation, which can be experienced in St Giles’ from August onwards.

SUPPORTING BOOKLET!

This booklet brings together lots of information we think will be useful to your role as a recordist, whether you are going to be making one recording or ten.
